Prancer is a wonderful family show with many roles for children and adults! Auditions will consist of brief prepared monologues from our list followed by scene readings. Actors should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to bring a character to life, work with others, and take direction. Scenes may be read with other auditioners and will be provided at auditions.
Since this is a Christmas show, we may add some Christmas songs before the show. If you would like to be considered for a Caroler, please also prepare a short Christmas song to sing!
Audition forms will be available at the Director’s Forum and auditions but feel free to fill it out online ahead of time here: https://forms.gle/oiRXFi3C3cTDgGTL9
Monologues can be found below. You are welcome to choose a different monologue if you would prefer. Please try to have the monologues memorized but it’s OK if they are not.
Monologues
For a Child/Teen Role (Jessica Riggs Type)
Play:Before Oz by Lauren Grove
Character: Frank (Can be played by any gender/youth)
The Vibe: Fierce, protective love for someone fragile, mixed with a touch of magical wonder. This mirrors Jessica’s determination to nurse Prancer back to health despite what the adults say.
"I brought you something. It’s a story, okay? A real one. See, there’s this place, way past the fields and the regular trees, where everything looks gray until you look close enough. And if you look close, you realize the trees aren’t dying—they’re just resting. They're waiting for someone who knows how to see them. I found a spot out there yesterday. It was quiet. So quiet I could hear my own breathing, and then I thought I heard something else. Like a heartbeat, right under the dirt. Everyone keeps telling me to stay inside, that it's too cold or it's dangerous, but they don't see what's out there. They don't know that if we just hold on, and keep it safe, the whole world changes. I'm not going to let anything happen to it. I promise."
For an Adult Female Role (Aunt Sarah or Sarah/The Shopkeeper Type)
Play:Our Town by Thornton Wilder
Character: Emily Webb
The Vibe: Pure, heartbreaking nostalgia and a sudden appreciation for the small, simple details of rural family life.
"Oh, earth, you're too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?—every, every minute? ... I can't look at everything hard enough. Good-by, Good-by, world. Good-by, Grover's Corners... Mama and Papa. Good-by to clocks ticking... and Mama's sunflowers. And food and coffee. And new-ironed dresses and hot baths... and sleeping and waking. Oh, earth, you're too wonderful for anybody to realize you."
For an Adult Male Role (John Riggs/The Dad Type)
Play:And Neither Have I Wings to Fly by Ann Noble
Character: Peter
The Vibe: A grounded, weathered father figure recounting a deeply emotional family memory. It perfectly captures the heavy, unspoken grief and love of a hard-working parent trying to hold a broken home together.
"Your mother used to sit right there by the glass when the frost hit the corners of the room. She wouldn't complain about the draft, not once. She’d just wrap that old wool blanket tighter around her shoulders and look out over the ridge. I used to think she was looking for something she lost out there in the dark. But she wasn't. She told me once, right before the winter took her, that she was just keeping watch. Making sure the path stayed clear so whatever was trying to find its way home wouldn't get stuck in the drifts. I didn't understand it then. I thought it was just pretty talk. But nights like tonight, when the wind comes up through the floorboards... I get it. You keep the light on because you have to. Because if you don't, the dark wins."
