June 2021:
It has been over a year since TCP has been able to present live theatre due to COVID-19. While some businesses have opened, TCP and other indoor venues have remained closed. TCP has still been active during this time. In preparation for reopening, TCP reviewed all local, state, CDC and other expert advice and we acted to protect our patrons, cast, crew, and other volunteers from COVID. We did this because you matter! We want you to be safe when you return to our theatre. We want you to have confidence that we have done our best to keep you safe.
With the help of a MIStages grant, TCP was able to undertake a number of measures that accomplish our goal: To protect everyone as best as possible from COVID and other concerns. This grant and our financial resources have allowed us to go above and beyond the minimum standards and requirements. Frankly, our actions are overkill. We did more than necessary.
What did we do? We did the little things and the big things. The little things you are already used to doing such as wearing masks when appropriate and using hand sanitizer. We have hand sanitizing stations in each of our buildings. We have sanitizing wipes in each bathroom, lobby, and elsewhere for your easy use.
The other things are more dramatic. We upgraded all of our HVAC units to doubly protect you. First, we added ultraviolet light (UVL) Respicaire units to each of our HVAC units. All the air passing through our units to warm or cool you passes through UVL units that kill COVID and other viruses. We then changed each units’ filters to those that capture smaller particles.
We then purchased a medical grade cold air ‘fogger’ that is used to spray a hypochlorous acid mist that kills COVID and other viruses on contact. This ‘fogger’ is used shortly prior to each building’s use so that any virus is killed before people arrive. These tiny particles (200 ppm) are harmless to humans and fabrics.
As if these measures are not enough, we also purchased stand-alone medical grade air purification units with MERV 17 filters to use in our smaller defined spaces: the kitchen, lobby, library, costume room, green room, dressing rooms, light & sound loft, and backstage. When on, these air purifiers capture virus sized particles continually. We have also purchased a personal sized purifier for use in the box office to assure those volunteers have added protection as well.
We have done more than food service establishments and breweries have done to be certified as a Michigan Safe Place. While they can seek State certification, we cannot. If we served food, we would indeed be certified.
Since we have done all these things, we hope you will be comfortable in returning and enjoying live in-person theatre at TCP once we reopen.
