MARJORIE PRIME
October 25 – November 10, 2019
By Jordan Harrison
Director: Peggy Harrington
Drama/Sci-Fi

2015 Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Drama

It’s the age of artificial intelligence, and 85-year-old Marjorie — a jumble of disparate, fading memories — has a handsome new companion who’s programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? In this richly spare, wondrous new play, Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits — if any — of what technology can replace.
"Memory is an essential element of life – crucial to thought, feeling, progress, identity. But it also comes into play with particular power and meaning after someone who has been loved dies. And it is this tension between life and death – with memory functioning as connective tissue – that animates Jordan Harrison’s subtly shattering play, Marjorie Prime." - Chicago Sun-Times

The show is directed by Peggy Harrington. Assisting the director are Assistant Director Joann Schma McMahon, Stage Manager Aaron Rennhack, Set Design Cassandra Hora, Set Construction Bruce Banghart, Tech/Lighting Design Matt "Dolphy" Clark, Properties Kathryn Kirkdorfer, Costumer Reta Trux, Lights/Sound Ariel Higgins, and Stage Crew Tabitha Nelson. Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award
Winner Silver Medal Onassis International Playwriting Competition
The Women of Lockerbie transports the audience to the hills of Scotland seven years after Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed in 1988 by a terrorist bomb and crashed into the small village, killing all 243 passengers, 16 crew members, and 11 individuals on the ground. It tells the plight of a mother from New Jersey traveling to Scotland to find her son’s remains. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. Determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, the women want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victims' families. Inspired by a true story, the characters and situations in the play are fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, the play is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate.

In 2006, lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel published Fun Home, a graphic memoir tracing her relationship to her closeted gay father, who committed suicide shortly after Bechdel, herself, came out as a lesbian to her parents. The book was both a critical and commercial success, spent two weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and garnered numerous award nominations, including the National Book Critics Circle Award. When her father died unexpectedly, Alison dove deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
